Ink Requirements For Large Format Uv Printers In Film Printing

The rapid development of the packaging industry has led to the use of a wide variety of plastic films in the printing industry. These films differ little in appearance, but their chemical composition and properties may vary widely. When printing a plastic film with a large format UV printer, it is necessary to determine which kind of ink is selected for printing based on the sample of the film, the type of printer, the printing speed and the use of the final printed goods. Since the film always contains a plasticizer, it is necessary to consider whether the adhesive in the ink will dissolve it, which may cause the plasticizer to transfer onto the ink film. If this happens, the ink film may be softened, or glue the printed plastic film together during the printing process of the large format UV printer. Since the surface of the plastic film is smooth and non-porous, and usually, in roll printing, the requirement for the ink is that the ink film can be dried immediately under the slight heat. Therefore, inks containing low boiling solvents are widely used because they provide the desired drying speed.

The types of films are celluloid, polyolefin (polyethylene, polypropylene), polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl fluoride, nylon, polyethylene, polyvinylidene chloride, polyester, etc. In the past, solvent-based inks were used to print films. Nowadays, many water-based inks are used. Kingsway's PVC film printer fully considers various factors affecting ink and creates an extremely refined printing effect.

Celluloid is a film of transparent soft cellulose, which is usually coated with various coating layers in order to withstand moisture and grease.

Both polyethylene and polypropylene films are petrochemicals. They are very soft, thermoplastic and transparent films. It is difficult to attach ink to untreated surfaces. Corona discharge can be used to improve surface adhesion. They are usually printed by flexographic printing, gravure printing or screen printing.

Large format UV printers must be specifically analyzed for specific substrate materials during the printing process to determine which printing process and printing inks are needed to obtain prints of high quality.
